7 Warning Signs of Water Main Issues

Main water line service

We all remember hearing that the “American Dream” was purchasing a home. Owning a home can be one of the most rewarding and yet challenging aspects of our day to day lives. Cleaning the inside of the house and bathrooms just makes sense because we live in and see them every day. As a homeowner myself, the unknown and unseen are always in the back of my mind when it comes to the unexpected home repair.

One of those big-ticket items that can lead to costly repair is the water main and sewer lines of the home. We never find ourselves thinking about them until there is a problem and we are without water service to the home or can’t flush a toilet because the sewer line is compromised.

As a homeowner, the water service to your home is typically delivered by either a town (municipality) or by a well-fed system. In a municipal fed system, the lines from the pumping station to the curb of your home are the responsibility of the town. The delivery from the water main to inside your home is 100% the responsibility of the homeowner.

Signs of a Water Main Issue

  1. Water Pressure

If you are noticing a reduction of the standard water pressure you have enjoyed in the past, you may be experiencing a water line leak. The leak may also lead to additional home and property damage if not corrected in a timely fashion. If you are barely receiving any water at all, you may have a ruptured line. In this case, try to shut off the water supply and contact our 24 hrs drain cleaning services as soon as possible.

  1. Increased Water Bill

One subtle sign of a potential issue with the delivery of water to the home is an increase in your water bill that comes unexpectedly. If you notice a spike in your bill it could be a sign a leak along the line.

  1. Discolored Water

A somewhat obvious sign of a water issue somewhere is discolored water. If you noticed discolored water coming from your faucets, toilets, and showers you should get it checked out to make sure there isn’t an issue that could be corrected. Rust discoloring water, worn out anode rods in water heaters and old piping materials may be the culprit. Copper pipes tend to rust, corrode, and oxidize more frequently than other piping materials. Look for rust, green spots, or chalky white deposits on the lines and replace only that damaged section before the problem gets bigger and more expensive.

  1. Standing Water in Lawn or In the Street

Simply put if it isn’t or hasn’t rained and you are still noticing damp or wet areas around the front of your home, you may have a leak in the line underneath the ground. In addition, if you notice bubbling in the street outside of your house, you may have a leak in the main as well. Reach out and or schedule your free estimate online for drain pipe cleaning services today.

  1. Water-Related Sounds and Bad Odors

If you can hear water sounds such as banging, dripping, clanking, and bubbling, you may have a leak in a line. In addition, if the water in your home isn’t moving as it should and is backed up you may have a sewer line clog or even worse a break in the sewer line. If you can smell sewage call immediately to have the situation remedied.

  1. Water backups

If you flush the toilet and water back up into a sink or bathtub drain, you may a water issue to deal with. Also, if water bubbles in your toilet when you turn on the closest sink or toilet/shower backs up, you may have a main sewer line close. If this is the case, stop using that toilet/sink/shower and contact us today. A simple snaking may resolve the issue before you have a larger issue to deal with.

  1. Water Damage

If there is water accumulating around your house located near sinks, toilets, showers, floors, and underneath pipes such as in your basement, you may have a water leak in the house. Water damage leads to mold and mildew issues which are health hazards. Damp drywall is damaging and can lead to an insect issue. Stained walls and ceilings are tail tell signs of damage and look unsightly. A prolonged water issue in the basement can lead to cracks in the walls and foundations which are another big-ticket item.

Most Common Causes of Water Line Issues

  • Tree Root Expansion
  • Old Age of drainage Systems
  • Improper Digging Around Property
  • Putting Off Maintenance of Systems
  • Hanging Things and Pulling on Pipes in Basement
